HISTORY OF TRADE UNIONISM AND LEGAL FRAMEWORK OF INDUSTRIAL RELATIONS IN NIGERIA
Abstract
This paper discusses the history of trade unionism and analyses the legal framework for industrial relations in Nigeria. Indeed, the issue of trade unions and industrial relations are issues that have been at the front burner of discourse for quite some time now. On several occasions, some of the matters have had to go to court for judicial pronouncements on naughty provisions of the Trade Union Act. The paper clarifies the key terms in the topic and, thereafter, chronicles the history of trade unionism in Nigeria. Using doctrinal methodology, the paper analyzes the laws that govern industrial relations in Nigeria, with a view to bringing out the lacunas therein and recommending ways through which trade unionism and industrial harmony can be strengthened between the Unions and government for the smooth running of the affairs of the country.
