TRENDS AND DYNAMICS IN CONSTITUTION MAKING AND DEVELOPMENT IN NIGERIA

Abstract

It is a truism that frameworks legal and Institutional framework provide support for constitutional democracy. They provide the requisite elixir for democracy. Various laws were discussed in this work: Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,1999,The Electoral Act,2022, Case law , Electoral Guidelines, National Judicial Council of Nigeria Policy Direction on Political and Election Related Cases,2022 and Election Judicial Proceedings Practice Direction,2023.The work also discussed international instruments supporting constitutional democracy, such as the Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination against women,1979, Universal Declaration on Human Rights, Convention on the Political Rights of Women,1953, African Charter on Human and People Rights,1981, African Charter on Democracy ,Election and Good Governance,2007 and International Covenant and Political Rights,1966.The work further discussed the institutional frameworks, such as the Legislature, Independent National Electoral Commission, The Judiciary, The Nigeria Bar Association, Security Agencies, Political parties, civil societies ,the media, National Human Rights Commission, Code of Conduct Tribunal and Tribunal, Economic and Financial Crime Commission and Independent Corrupt Practices Commission and Traditional/ Religious institutions. The conclusion is thereafter drawn.
