Abstract

Punctuality is a fundamental professional attribute that reflects discipline, accountability, reliability, and respect for organizational schedules. In nursing, punctuality plays a crucial role in ensuring continuity of care, effective communication during shift handovers, patient safety, and overall healthcare quality (American Nurses Association [ANA], 2023; Henderson & Barker, 2021). Despite its significance, challenges such as poor time management, organizational constraints, workplace stress, transportation difficulties, and inadequate motivation continue to contribute to lateness among healthcare professionals (Bae & Fabry, 2020; Blake et al., 2022). This concept analysis aimed to clarify the concept of punctuality within the nursing profession by identifying its defining attributes, antecedents, consequences, empirical referents, and practical applications. Walker and Avant's eight-step concept analysis method was employed, with Donabedian's Model of Healthcare Quality and Skinner's Operant Conditioning Theory serving as the theoretical frameworks to explain the structural, behavioural, and organizational dimensions of punctuality. A comprehensive literature review was conducted using PubMed, CINAHL, MEDLINE, PsycINFO, and Web of Science to identify relevant conceptual and empirical evidence. The analysis identified timeliness, reliability, accountability, preparedness, and commitment as the defining attributes of punctuality. Key antecedents included professional ethics, effective time management, organizational support, workplace policies, and personal responsibility, whereas the consequences comprised improved patient safety, enhanced teamwork, increased productivity, efficient workflow, higher patient satisfaction, and strengthened professional reputation. Conversely, persistent lateness was associated with communication failures, delayed patient care, increased workload among colleagues, and a greater risk of medical errors. The findings underscore the importance of fostering a culture of punctuality through organizational policies, leadership support, behavioural reinforcement, and continuous professional education. Promoting punctuality as a core professional value can strengthen nursing practice, improve healthcare quality, and enhance patient outcomes.
