Communication Clarity and Timeliness as Determinants of MTN Dealership Performance in Lagos State, Nigeria

Abstract
Downstream communication in telecommunications distribution determines whether independent dealers translate corporate promotions, tariffs, technical instructions and service procedures into accurate point-of-sale execution. This study examined communication clarity and timeliness as determinants of MTN dealership performance in Lagos State, Nigeria. It addressed two questions: how communication clarity relates to dealers' sales volume, and how communication timeliness influences dealers' product and service knowledge. Anchored in agency theory and participatory communication, the study adopted a descriptive correlational mixed-method design. Quantitative data were collected from 222 MTN dealership owners sampled equally from Lagos West, Lagos East and Lagos Central senatorial districts, while 12 dealership owners participated in in-depth interviews. A validated four-point questionnaire produced a Cronbach's alpha coefficient of .768. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics, simple linear regression and thematic analysis. Findings showed that clarity had a strong positive association with perceived sales volume (grand mean = 3.61; beta = .932; R2 = .868; p < .001). Dealers reported that clear information on promotions, prices, commissions and activation steps increases staff confidence, reduces point-of-sale errors and improves upselling. Timeliness also significantly predicted product/service knowledge (grand mean = 3.35; beta = .696; R2 = .484; p < .001). However, dealers distinguished between prompt reactive alerts and inadequate pre-launch lead time for training materials and tariff explanations. The study concludes that downstream communication is a strategic performance resource. It recommends a minimum 48-hour pre-launch information window, dealer-action templates, synchronised portal updates and periodic communication-effectiveness audits.
